2006 marked an exciting milestone as the German-Masontown Public Library entered its 40th ANNIVERSARY of service to the community. Several events to celebrate this momentous accomplishment were made possible through the generous support of many individuals, groups, and municipal leaders. The Board of Directors has discussed exciting plans to improve our programs and facilities in the near future.
2009 marked ANOTHER exciting milestone as the German-Masontown Public Library Board of Directors entered into an agreement with Masontown Borough Council to develop a new library to better serve our community. The former Health Mart/ Gabler's building was sold to Masontown Borough and blueprints have been drawn for the new Masontown Municipal Center. In addition to providing a modern facility for the Masontown Police department on the lower level, borough and council offices on the upper level, the front section of the building will be the new home of German-Masontown Public Library. Both entities will share a spacious new meeting room. The "railroad tie" fence along Main and Church will be removed and improvements added to make the building a community landmark. Ample parking will be available for library patrons and persons conducting business with the borough.
We feel that the Masontown Municipal Center will be a huge plus for the downtown area. Hopefully, the traffic at the library and borough offices will encourage some other small businesses to open in the area; a news stand, coffee shop or children's store would be nice additions to the business district.
The borough offices are totally inadequate for the community's needs and the current location is difficult to access. The police headquarters building is outdated and cramped. Both the borough offices and police department suffer from lack of adequate parking. Climbing the steep stairs to enter the library is difficult or impossible for many residents. Lack of accessibility is a very serious concern for the library board. We have outgrown the library and are unable to offer programs and activities because of space limitations. Unfortunately, expansion of the current building isn't practical for many reasons.
The library board is very excited about this project and is making plans for the move. We look forward to providing a beautiful new library and improved services to the residents of German Township, Masontown Borough and the surrounding area.
